One of the BEST tools for transitioning from an activity to another.

When I first tried this out I couldn't believe how well it worked. My Daughter has alot of trouble when she has to stop one of her favorite activities. Everytime she had to stop playing on the computer, when a video was over, or it was time to get out of the bath she had a meltdown. A HUGE MELTDOWN! I dreaded even letting her start anything I knew would end this way. Then a therapist at her group told me that they used " 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, all done." to help the kids with the switch from one activity… Continue

Visual Schedules

We know that visual icons ie PECS (ie. Boardmaker icons) truly help our students structure their day and work time.

I've always used these icons, but have found that some student just don't quite "get" the pictures. So... I've introduced them to "Object schedules".

I'm starting with just one activity and then I'll add on. So for bathroom, I'll have a toilet paper roll velcroed to a board on wall, and then they take that and match it to either a b-room icon on the wall by the bathroom.

To prom… Continue

Suicide prevention for students and teachers

You can vote for suicide prevention help and the society can win 1 million dollars just click on this link http://apps.facebook.com/chasecommunitygiving and login with facebook, it is easy and could save a life! The Issue Each year, 1,100 college students die by suicide, more than die from any other cause except accidents. Almost all suffered from depression or another serious but treatable mental disorder. But an estimated 85 percent hadn’t sought any type of treatment because they were mistrustful of involving a stranger in their problems, feared the judgment of friends, didn’t know where to go or were just too overwhelmed to seek help. To stop this tragic loss of young lives, AFSP developed the Interactive Screening Program, a web-based system that connects at-risk students to a campus counselor and facilitates anonymous online exchanges to resolve barriers to treatment. ISP has been recognized as a Best Practice for Suicide Prevention based on published evidence of its effectiveness in encouraging at-risk students into treatment. Our Big Idea is to ensure that college students get the help they need by making this secure, anonymous and effective program available to schools in every state. The Plan At a cost of 18,000 dollars to develop a customized ISP website for each school, train campus clinicians and provide implementation assistance, AFSP lacks the resources to expand the program beyond the small number of pilot schools. With the 1 million, we propose to: Enhance the ISP software to include updated graphics and program technology, including applications for mobile devices; Establish the enhanced ISP on 50 new campuses, one in every state. In selecting campuses, preference will be given to large public institutions that commit to helping disseminate the ISP throughout the state; and Work with these campuses to develop and implement activities to create suicide awareness and educate students about suicide risk factors and warning signs, thus creating a campus culture that supports the ISP. This will include distributing AFSP’s film, “The Truth about Suicide: Real Stories of Depression in College” and organizing suicide prevention walks on campus. The Outcome The ultimate outcome of this plan will be to substantially reduce student suicide through early recognition and vigorous treatment of depression and other mental disorders that are responsible for over 90 percent of all suicides. Measurable outcomes include: 1. Implement and document results of ISP in 50 target schools during Year 1; 2. Disseminate ISP to a minimum of 15 new schools in each state during each of Years 2 and 3, using evaluation results from the initial 50 schools to obtain funding from states, foundations and other national and local agencies. When fully implemented over a 3-year period, this plan will result in the establishment of the ISP on 1,550 campuses, representing over one-third of the country’s 4,500 colleges and universities. With this critical mass, we anticipate that within another several years, ISP will become part of most campuses’ suicide prevention strategy, thereby reducing the number of college student lives lost to suicide

Do whatever you need to do to get the answer you seek!

I Teach Autism is a group effort; founded by a State Board Certified Special Education teacher who currently teaches a full classroom of students with autism, aspergers and a few other pervasive developmental disorders. The site’s founder writes “I’ve been teaching students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) for years, but it’s been my passion long before I became a teacher to students with autism. Sounds cheesy, but it’s true!”

Our “team” gathers countless autism teaching strategies, free autism teaching tools, printouts, worksheets, themes and lesson plans. In short, anything that can help others reach these wonderful students. We review and determine if content is worth placing on the site. Of course, we are always looking for guest authors and contributors. Please feel free to contact us about displaying your work and thoughts on either our blog or in the recommended links section. We are also looking for experts and others willing to be interviewed by I Teach Autism.

Additionally; teachers, educators and parents with those diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder visit to get the latest news and an opinion from someone that holds this topic very close to her heart. We encourage you to write us, ask questions in our forum, reach out to other members.
